Riyadh Public Realm

Project type

Urban Planning (Harry Dobbs Design)

Date

2019

Location

London

This project explores a design strategy for improving the public realm across 14 sites in Riyadh, aiming to create outdoor spaces that are culturally resonant, environmentally responsive, and socially engaging.

The process began with in-depth urban analysis, including site observations, mapping existing public elements, and assessing the character and behavior patterns of local neighbourhoods. Stage 1 focused on understanding how public spaces are currently used — identifying barriers, user experience gaps, and the cultural rhythms of daily street life.

In Stage 2, the strategy was developed and tested through parametric modelling using Grasshopper, which allowed a comparative study across the 14 sites. The digital script helped visualize how design elements — such as shading, seating, and circulation paths — could be tailored to local pedestrian behavior and environmental conditions.

The outcome was a series of adaptable urban furniture designs, proposed as modular interventions to enhance comfort, usability, and identity in the public realm. This project highlights how research-driven design can support inclusive, responsive spaces that connect people with place.
